英文量詞 可數 或 不可數 / 單數 或 複數用法

究竟some of the movie是跟is還是are? A cup of tea是跟is，但為什麼a herd of cow是跟are? 這些「量詞問題」的確在困擾著很多人，這個其實跟量詞的語感有關，這篇文章會跟大家全面探討一下。

 

請將以下1和2的例句同時比較。

1. 量詞被視為adj. +可數單數名詞(跟singular)

 

例: Some of the movie is good.
A lot of food is delicious.
Two-thirds of the gold bar is yours.

 

2. 量詞被視為adj. +可數複數名詞(跟Plural)

 

例: Some of the movies are good.
A lot of foods are delicious.
Two-thirds of the gold bars are yours.

 

記住在這裡的量詞Some/a lot of/Two-thirds是被視為adj., 而非noun，所以是不以這些單詞來分單複數的，關鍵是「看後面」形容的名詞來分單複數：如你只想表達那名詞是「一個整体」，是可用單數的，例movie(縱然一個整体內有多套電影)/food(縱然有好幾道菜)。相反，如你想表達眾多中的一部份，就用複數，例movies/foods。現實上，兩種用法都被接受的(複數的用法居多)。

 

以下都是被視為adj. 的量詞: Numerous, Countless, lots of, many …一般後面多數跟複數，跟單數也是容許的。

 

請將以下3和4的例句同時比較。

 

3. 量詞被視為n.( 作可數單數)(跟singular)

 

例: a cup of tea is better.
A bottle of water is …
One of the movies is…
Each of us is…
Every one of us is…
The number of girls is 25.

 

4. 量詞被視為n.( 作可數複數)(跟plural)

 

A herb of cow are…
A herb of cows are…
A school of fish are…
A school of fishes are…
A number of girls are…

這裡的量詞被視為n. , 而後面的of X卻被視為adj. phrase了(所以後面的X的單/複數變得不重要了) 。還有，有’a’的原來不一定單數(雖然a cup是單數)，如a herb是複數！a school是複數! A number也是複數。(因為裡頭實際是複數)

 

同理，a host of, a group of, a multitude of, a large number of, a number of都被視為n的可數複數…
留意，the number of是可數單數，a number of居然是可數複數，再一次証明有’a’ 絕對可以是「複數」！

 

5. 量詞被視為adj.+ 不可數名詞(當然跟singular)

 

例: Abundant water is …
A great deal of water is …
The amount of turnover is …

留意，the number of是可數單數的n. ，而the amount of是不可數名詞的adj.!

 

6. 量詞no, none

 

例: No dogs allowed.
No dog is allowed.
None of the plates is…
None of the plates are…
「零」有時單數、有時複數。多數以複數應用。

 

7. 量詞Either…or(兩者其一)/ Neither…nor(兩者都不是)/Not only…but also(兩者皆是)→ 都是跟singular!

 

例: Either John or Mary is…
Neither John nor Mary is…
Not only John but also Mary is …= John and Mary are … (雖然兩者皆是，但卻用is!)

 

8. 時間、金錢、距離的複數是(跟singular!)

例: Ten hours of sleep is too much.
Ten dollars is important to me then.
5000 kilometres is my target.

 

9. 有些vocabulary 是s尾卻是單數e.g. means手段、news新聞、robotics機械人學、measles麻疹、diabetes糖尿病

例: What a news is that…
The means is…
